Caves in Slovenia
By Emily
For those of you planning your trip to Slovenia, or just wondering what these caves are all about; read on. In our crazy Slovenian adventures, we ended up going to the two most popular tourist caves in Slovenia, Škocjan caves and Postojna caves. We decided to go to Slovenia’s caves because they are one of Slovenia’s main tourist attractions and seemed to be a prided specialty. They were definitely special! It was an amazing experience for us and we highly recommend it.
The caves are quite different from each other but are both cool and you can’t go wrong with either of them. Postojna has a lot of tourists with buses coming in herds. However Postojna does live up to the reason that it’s the most visited cave in the world, it is quite striking and beautiful. It is brighter than Škocjan which both makes the underground world more impressive but at the same time not as natural. Bringing a slightly Gringotts, Harry Potter experience, is a train system that takes you through more than half of the tour and is a cool way to look at the caves. Unlike the Škocjan caves, you are able to take pictures.
Škocjan is less touristy and feels a lot more authentic. The caves are not as stunning as Postojna but are still very cool. Škocjan also has a second part that is unguided and you are able to take pictures. The caves at Škocjan are unique in the fact that you can experience the river that forms it, when in Postojna you only see the river briefly at the end. Škocjan caves is located outside of a small town and to get back to the parking lot, you get to walk through and experience the pure, authenticity of the Slovenian village.
